The Open Society Foundations (OSF) work to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens. Education is a fundamental to advancing this vision of open society. OSF seeks to make the right to education meaningful through grant-making to a diverse array of civil society organisations. Most countries have laws requiring children to attend school and constitutional guarantees on the right to education. Yet this right is threatened through exclusion, segregation, corruption, weak education policies and insufficient accountability of governments and education providers. OSF works in many different areas of education, from scholarships to early childhood education to inclusive education for marginalised children and has a number of different programmes and initiatives involved in education. All share a commitment to education as the cornerstone of an open society.

The Education Support Programme (ESP) is the only OSF programme to focus exclusively on education, the programme works in South Asia, Africa, Central Asia and Central and Eastern Europe and seeks to enable and promote, through grant-making and advocacy, quality education for all. The Programme recognises that effective, timely and concise communications remain a vital component of its work to provide greater visibility to education related work taking place within the foundations and to enhance knowledge of ESP’s role within the Open Society Foundations and to highlight the Programme’s own work and activities.
