We define philanthropy as the giving of resources in an engaged and strategic way for maximum impact and in a tax efficient manner. It can include the giving of money, assets, time, talent, voice and one’s social capital. We believe in the power of philanthropy as a great social connector and the source of many great opportunities.

The Advocacy Debate

12:00 am

How can funders use more of their assets to make more of a difference? If this question keeps you up at night, then this event is an opportunity to explore some answers.

As trusts and foundations increasingly look to become advocates for social change as well as funders of it, we will uncover some of the reasons why foundations might step into the world of advocacy or influencing, and some of the successes and challenges of taking this path.

Speakers

  • Paul Streets, Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales
  • Angela Kail, New Philanthropy Capital (NPC).
  • Chair Esther Thompson, ACF

Utilising findings in recent research (More than Grants), we will delve into the role of foundations as advocates for social change: highlighting the influencing practices of funders from around the world, exploring different methods, unpacking evidence of what works and how others measure the effects of their advocacy or influencing work.

To provide food for thought, Paul will state the case as to why he thinks the time is right for trusts and foundations to become more involved in influencing work, and Angela will share learnings from the research - both the barriers to, and opportunities for, foundations getting involved in advocacy work.
